Abstract

Abstract:
The aim of the thesis was to create an inventory of the trees and shrubs growing in the public areas of Nova Gorica; to determine their quantity and establish the register. Each of the subjects was listed by the following parameters: a serial number, genera, species, diameter, height, age, level of injuries and required measures. In all, there were listed 2565 trees, 2062 shrubs and 54 other plants from 141 genera and 256 different species. The mostfrequent genera of trees are Cedrus (10,3 %), Acer (9,2 %) and Prunus (8,7%); the most common genera of shrubs are Prunus (9,7 %), Rosa (9,3 %) and Forsythia (5,8 %). In the age structure mature trees dominate with 44,6 %; most of the trees are heavily damaged (49,5 %). The measures are suggested for71,7 % of trees and 19,6 % of shrubs; their realization would cost 253.644. The questionnaire was filled out by 137 people. Most of them think that trees and shrubs are well cared for; that their quantity is appropriate; but the diversity should be higher. The majority miss more playgrounds, parks, benches and gardening areas. Residents show positive attitude and interest for trees and shrubs but their knowledge and attitude are still insufficient, which can be solved with education, effective information systemand legislation.
