Talk-variety shows are programmes that combine music, comedy and other forms of entertainment. They developed in America, moving from radio to television, which added an important visual element. In Slovenia, the trend started in the 1980s, but the shows reached their peak in the first ten years of the new millennium. They occupied prime-time slots. The aim of the thesis was to examine the development of the talk-variety programme genre in this country and to identify its key genre characteristics. Due to the number of programmes that also appeared on commercial television, we focused only on programmes on RTV Slovenia. We selected the programmes Košnikova gostilna, Spet doma, Na zdravje! and V petek zvečer. We found that talk-variety shows share genre characteristics of talk, competition and feature programmes. The programmes cyclically alternated between traditional themes in programme content and studio appearance and folk-entertainment music, with a modern studio appearance, entertainment music and more focus on guests. In the programmes studied, the guests, presenters and other permanent characters created a representation of ordinary people and representative members of society through the specific communicative ethos of the programmes. With the most recent programme analysed, the genre has undergone a renewal, turning towards the integration of tradition with the innovations of the times.
