Abstract
The new DEspec Germanium Array Spectrometer (DEGAS), used at GSI/FAIR, includes bismuth germanate (BGO) scintillation detectors for active shielding to improve the sensitivity of its high-purity germanium (HPGe) detectors. The BGO detectors have a very high gamma-ray detection efficiency and can suppress background, such as Compton-scattered photons, by operating in an anti-coincidence veto mode with the germanium detectors. The BGO system was characterized and its performance was compared to simple gamma-ray propagation simulations.
