The paper describes broader aspects of electronic discourse which have to be taken into consideration in an integrated analysis of texts within electronic communication. It is still a fundamental question where in the system of linguistic genres electronic communication is to be classified. Research shows that it contains elements of written text transmitted through a visual medium, as well as elements of oral discourse. When defining analysis criteria it is necessary to consider the specifics of the medium, the altered mode of communication and the formation of a new culture of communication. Further analysis will show the characteristics that may make this language a new genre - so far they are recognized in a broader sense as 'emailisms'.
