Abstract

Title:Preservation of Individuality in Persons with Dementia in the Secured Unit of DEOS Senior Centre Gornji Grad
Abstract:
In my master's thesis, I explored the preservation of individuality in persons with dementia in the secured unit of the DEOS Senior Centre Gornji Grad. I was interested in understanding how the individuality of people with dementia is maintained from admission to the secured unit, the role and significance of their life stories, and individual planning in preserving the individuality of persons with dementia. Additionally, I explored how the care of individuals with dementia in the secured unit is tailored to their characteristics, wishes and needs, as well as the role of the staff and family members in preserving the individuality of persons with dementia. Research results were obtained through triangulation of research methods: interviews with staff members who have been employed in the secured unit for at least six months and with family members of residents who have been living in the secured unit for at least three months, through participant observation and analysis of documentary materials. The study revealed that persons with dementia are mostly involved in the admission process to the secured unit, and that their participation in creating life stories and individual plans depends on their abilities and the degree of cognitive decline. The preservation of individuality in individuals with dementia in the secured unit is facilitated by both staff and family members. This involves encouraging independence, providing opportunities for self-expression, adapting to residents, enabling decision-making, offering choices, allowing the expression of opinions, providing individualized care, creating a safe and familiar environment, considering the needs, desires, and habits of residents, preserving their hobbies, and maintaining dignity. However, the study found that not all staff members are familiar with the life stories and individual plans of the residents. Additionally, there are obstacles from the staff's perspective that hinder the customization of care for residents. Although the residents have some choices in clothing, food, and activities, these choices are limited. Family members play a crucial role in preserving the individuality of their loved ones, especially by providing information about the resident.. The research concludes that while the individuality of persons with dementia can be preserved to some extent, it is limited. The suggestions provided ideas for improving care and enabling individuals with dementia to maintain their individuality.
