Wood is a very useful and popular building material that needs to be regularly renewed and maintained, as wood and wood products have a limited service life. Due to the safety requirements in sports facilities, it is essential to regularly maintain and replace worn and damaged elements It was decided to renew the cycling track surface at the velodrome in Češča vas, as the riding surfaces were not only exposed to the physical stress of bicycles, but also to weather and environmental conditions. The merbau wood used for the surface was thus replaced. Through laboratory tests, we determined the natural resistance of this wood, evaluated its durability, and compared it to domestic wood species such as spruce and beech. We found that merbau wood is exceptionally resistant to fungal attack and is therefore one of the most durable wood species, while spruce was categorized as a wood with lower natural resistance. The service life achievable with merbau is 14 times longer than that of spruce.
