Abstract
This master’s dissertation discusses modeling and sampling of microplastics (MP) on the Slovenian coast. The Nafta3d model based on particle tracking method was used to simulate spreading of MP. For each of the three potential sources of MP discharge into the sea (rivers Rižana and Dragonja and the discharge from the sewage treatment plant Piran), we simulated four wind conditions and constructed images of MP concentrations in a one-day temporal resolution. From the obtained 84 images of the performed simulations the pathways of MP dispersion were evident. Based on the results of the model, we selected three beaches for MP sampling and three reference beaches where, based on the simulations, contamination with MP should be lower. MP isolation from samples taken at the six locations was based on flotation, and potential MP particles were identified based on a robust melting identification method. The results of the sampling and MP analysis showed, that the beaches where more MP from the selected sources was carried by simulated circulation are more polluted with MP than the reference beaches. The Nafta3d numerical model proved to be a suitable tool for predicting the MP dispersion in the coastal sea.

Abstract:
Magistrsko delo obravnava modeliranje in vzorčenje mikroplastike (MP) na slovenski obali. S programom Nafta3d smo izvedli simulacije širjenja MP po metodi sledenja delcev. Za vsakega od treh potencialnih virov izpusta MP v morje (Rižana, Dragonja in izpust iz komunalne čistilne naprave Piran) smo simulirali štiri vetrovne razmere in izrisali slike koncentracij MP s časovno resolucijo 1 dan. Iz dobjenih 84 slik izvedenih simulacij je bilo razvidno, kam se MP širi v izbranih razmerah. Na podlagi rezultatov modela smo za vzorčenje določili tri plaže, ki so bolj izpostavljene onesnaženju z MP in tri referenčne plaže, kjer bi morala biti na podlagi simulacij onesnaženost z MP nižja. Izolacijo MP iz vzorcev s šestih izbranih lokacij smo naredili na podlagi flotacije, potencialne delce MP pa identificirali z uporabo robustne metode identifikacije s taljenjem. Rezultati vzorčenj in analize MP so pokazali, da so plaže, kamor je v izvedenih simulacijah potovalo več MP iz izbranih virov, res bolj onesnažene z MP od referenčnih plaž. Numerični model Nafta3d se je izkazal kot primerno orodje za predvidevanje potovanja delcev MP v obalnem morju.
