Abstract

Title:The Occupational Status of Translator Association Members in Slovenia and Austria: A Cross-National Comparison
Abstract:
The legal status of professional translators in many countries around the world lacks detailed regulations. This thesis aims to explore the occupational status of translator association members in Slovenia and Austria. The goal is to establish whether members of the associations DZTPS, DSKP, UNIVERSITAS, and IG Übersetzerinnen Übersetzer work as professional translators in the translation market and to compare their perceptions on regulation, recognition, remuneration, and reputation of the translation profession. To achieve this, a questionnaire was administered to the members and expert interviews were conducted with the representatives of DZTPS and UNIVERSITAS. Quantitative and qualitative analyses allowed us to establish that most members work as professional translators in the translation market where they feel visible and valued. In contrast, many believe that translators do not receive adequate recognition in society and that neither access to the profession nor translation prices are properly regulated. The findings can be utilized as a springboard for further research in various social or political contexts and to advocate for areas where the translation profession lacks regulation and recognition.
