Abstract

Abstract:
Forests account for 70% of the total surface of Natura 2000 sites in Slovenia. This is a result of sustainable forestry that was planned and monitored by the public forestry service. By analysing relevant literature anddoing a case study (Bohor Forest Management Unit), we found that (from the expert and the economic point of view) the integration of management of the Natura forest areas into the forest management plans is justified; the latter make a splendid example of plans for sustainable management of natural resources. Such integration calls for amending the concept of forestry management planning to encompass the species and habitat types that are important for preserving a favourable status of species and habitat types. These new contents will have to be considered when evaluating the functions offorests and defining the goals, guidelines and measures. They will also needto be taken into consideration when developing the system of monitoring habitat types and species habitats; they have to be thoroughly integrated intothe concept of comprehensive monitoring of forest development.
