Abstract:

Keywords:TITLE:If we are really interested in getting an answer to the question, why languages never exist without having dialects and Slovenian has dialects up to now we have to become conscious of what Bühler told us about the functions of language signs in his famous organomodel. We then will see that from the beginning language was used not only to express our ideas or simply to communicate but also and at the same time to indicate social features, especially, which social group we are belonging to. Therefore we can say that from the beginning of the existence of language social groups used to speak differently in order to indicate who was a member of the group and who was not. Dialects therefore being special indicators of regional identity a part of the nature of language and Slovenian could only be thought as having no dialects, but could never exist having dialects./KEYWORDS:dialect, Slovene language, Bühler, organomodel, functions of language signs, indicator of social features, regional identity
