Abstract
Na pozitivno prilagoditev vpliva pretečeni čas od posega, podpora bližnjih, družbena vključenost, opravljanje poklicnega dela, socialna mreža, različne oblike podpore, zadovoljstvo s protezo in njena uporaba, aktivno spoprijemanje s stresom, optimistična osebnostna naravnanost, višina amputacije in odsotnost fantomske bolečine. Mlajši amputiranci in ženske z amputacijo imajo boljšo telesno podobo in višjo kakovost življenja.

Title:Self-esteem and body image of amputees : diploma work
Abstract:
Introduction: In modern times people are often respected and accepted for their physical appearances. The latter presents a special problem for many amputees who have to deal with their disrupted body image along with the limitations in their physical and social activities following the loss of a body part. It often affects their self-image, self-respect, and mental health. Body image is the way we view ourselves physically, and also our assumptions of how we are perceived by other people. The body imperfection or the change of physical abilities may threaten the body image of a patient with amputation. Purpose: The aim of the diploma work was to conduct a review of the relevant literary sources exploring the body image and the self-image of persons with amputation, the impact of the changed appearance on the person's physical and psychological wellbeing, and the effect of rehabilitation and satisfaction with prosthetic devices on the acceptance of a new body image and self-image. Methods: A literature review of the relevant professional and scientific literary sources in Slovene and English was performed. The search was conducted in the bibliographical databases and the results of the study were analysed and compared. Results: Analysis of the study results indicates that professional support is of essence in the first five years after amputation. Positive adaptation to changes is enhanced by the time elapsed since amputation, support of the family members and friends, social interactions, ability of job performance, social network, several forms of help and support, active coping with stress, positive personal attitudes, the use and satisfaction with prosthetic devices, amputation level and the absence of phantom pain. Discussion and conclusion: An individual will accept their changed body image within the frame of the pre-existing perceptions of self, which is shaped by the actual or perceived body change. The changed body image may lead to long-term depression, anxiety, lowered quality of life and limitations in daily activities. The importance of psychological support along with physical rehabilitation cannot be overemphasised. Health professionals working with amputees should possess the basic understanding of all aspects of rehabilitation, including the emotional ramifications of a limb loss and the entailing distorted body image and self-image.
