Society has always believed that the key role of women in society is to give birth and take care of children. However, there are many women who do not want to have children and therefore experience discrimination because of this life decision. In my master's thesis, on the one hand, I investigate how society reacts to women who do not want to have children. On the other hand, I explore how these women feel accepted in society. In the theoretical part, I present the historic role of women in societies, gender inequality, motherhood, parenting, society's attitude towards motherhood and society's attitude towards women who do not want to have children.
The research in the master's thesis consists of quantitative and qualitative work. In the quantitative part, I was interested in the attitudes of Slovenian society to women who do not want to have children. In the qualitative part of the research, I was interested in how women who do not want to have children experience their position in society, how their loved ones regard their position, what they think about the various stereotypes attributed to them; and their understanding of the reasons why many people do not consider their decision “normal”.
