Abstract

Title:Analysis of mitigation measures for a safe transition to the use of digital flight instruments
Abstract:
In modern general aviation, it is increasingly common to install digital flight instruments in aircraft cabins, replacing analog instruments. Improper use can cause reading errors, which have a key impact on the deterioration of flight safety. In order to improve safety, a suitable transition between instrument types is crucial, where the changes in the use of different instruments are shown to the pilot, with an emphasis on the key differences and the most common errors. Digital instruments have a different display of basic parameters during flight, and at the same time a larger amount of other data and parameters that are not part of analog instruments are displayed. We performed an analysis of both types of instruments and compared them. When reviewing the guidelines of the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), we found that in order to fly an aircraft equipped with digital instruments, it is necessary to have completed the differences training. However, since this training does not provide direct guidance for transitioning to digital instruments, we have compiled mitigation measures based on the National Transportation Safety Board's (NTSB) aviation accident study. These measures are presented in the form of two tasks covering a range of learning objectives and requiring knowledge of the G1000 digital instruments. To perform the tasks, we used the new flight simulator of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, which has a built-in G1000 digital instrument.
