Abstract

Title:Eco's novel The Name of the Rose and its adaptations
Abstract:
The master thesis attempts to answer the question of how to analyze the film, film adaptations of literary works, and where film and literary art meet. We will look into two concepts with which I will try to approach the film, i.e. film criticism and film analysis, to the reader. To better understand film art as such, we will look at its beginnings and examine the main terms and procedures used by filmmakers in filming and editing. In the following thesis, I will present theories with which we can analyze film, with an emphasis on narratology and semiology. I try to give a comprehensive methodological basis, based on different scientific disciplines, and write a complex analysis taking into account the cultural and religious influence, both the time in which the novel takes place and the circumstances of space and time in which the film adaptations were made. In the critique of literary work and the critique of its screen adaptations, the latter task also touches on the reception theory, as it considers the opinions of the reader. The viewer is dealing with, understanding, and interpreting the novel and its adaptations. According to Jacques Aumont, the most successful analysis is the one that interprets the film in such a way that anyone can verify these theses and findings.
