Data on Primoz Trubar's predecessors and his descent date back a bit before the time of his birth, which creates open space for various hypothesis on his origins. There is an interesting fact that the family name Trubar does not exist in Slovenia any more and that this family name or similar ones are not to be found even in the vicinity of his birth place. However, there are several toponyms Trubar* found in the area of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the country from which some of population migrated towards the west in the late Middle Ages because of the growing Turkish threat. These two facts evoke some questions on the origins of Trubar's kin, and what contributed to the extinction of his family name. Since there are some indices in his biography that relate him and his family to south slavic space, the article explains, among other facts, why it is impossible to entirely exclude the hypothesis that the origin of the Trubars might also be searched in this direction.
