Introduction: Autism spectrum disorder is a lifelong disorder that can affect occupational functioning in a variety of ways across the lifespan. The main symptoms are deficits in social communication and social interaction, and restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviour, interests or activities. The primary aim of occupational therapy for adolescents with autism spectrum disorder at home, at school and in the wider environment. Purpose: To identify what is known about occupational therapy for adolescents with autism spectrum disorder and to explore the areas of action targeted by occupational therapy and how occupational therapy supports adolescents with autism spectrum disorder to integrate into daily life. Methods: We performed a literature review, searching the CINAHL, Web of Science, PubMed and OTSeeker databases. The criteria for selecting the literature included population, intervention, outcomes, types of studies, year of publication and language. We presented the article search process in a PRISMA flowchart. Thirteen articles were selected according to relevance. Results: Three themes were derived from the literature review: animal-assisted therapy for adolescents with autism spectrum disorder, mobility for adolescents with autism spectrum disorder, and the challenges and integration of adolescents with autism spectrum disorder into everyday life. Discussion and conclusion: Occupational therapy intervention with animals has positive effects in the physical and social domains for adolescents with autism spectrum disorder. In mobility training, occupational therapists are tasked with assessing individuals, organisations and systems and providing the necessary interventions to promote cooperation and safety. To address the challenges presented by adolescents with autism spectrum disorder, occupational therapy interventions may include a variety of strategies such as behavioral interventions, social learning approaches, behavioral skills training, Ayres sensory integration therapy, hippotherapy, technology, parent training and educational programs on puberty.
