Abstract

Title:Gender-sensitive language in legalisation
Abstract:
The Master's thesis examines the impact of language on gender discrimination and the connection between language, sex/gender and legislation in order to establish the harm and oppression gendered language has on gender minorities, as well as the possibilities of using gender-sensitive language in Slovenian legislation. I present how discriminatory and stereotypical understandings of gender are reflected in legal provisions throughout the language. This is primarily analysed through an examination of three key concepts in the Master's thesis, sex/gender and language, which are also implicated in legal rules through their rootedness in society. The purpose of gender-sensitive language is to avoid word choices which may be interpreted as biased, discriminatory or demeaning. I present the guidelines on gender-sensitive language and a critical analysis of the possibility of implementing gender-sensitive language in Slovenian legislation.

Keywords:gender-sensitive language, discrimination, gender, language, the stereotype of gender roles, generic male gender, nomotechnics, LGBT+, gender equality
