Abstract

Abstract:
The theoretical part of this master's thesis aimed at studying small group learning format as an alternative form of cello teaching in music schools. We also presented the individual learning format, which is the standard for teaching instruments, and its advantages and disadvantages. We explained the basic factors of the learning process, which are the pupil, the teacher and the learning content, and their interrelationships. The learning performance depends on the most important relationship between the student and the teacher. We present different types of learning formats and focused on the presentation of the group learning format, where we find different definitions by different authors. In group teaching, optimal formation of the groups by the teacher is important and is also influenced by the age of the pupil. We have reviewed the advantages of small group teaching and found that it has a significant impact on the cognitive, social and emotional-motivational development of the pupils, and pointed out some of the disadvantages. We have examined the importance of peers in group learning and given various reasons for its introduction. The empirical part involved 6 cello students from the Music School Murska Sobota, divided into two groups of 3 students of similar age and level of experience. Each group had five 45-to 60-minutes lessons in April and May 2023. After the lessons, the students were interviewed and the answers were analysed. Parents were also interviewed as they are an important part of music education.
