Abstract

Title:Conceptual design of youth apartments with an animal shelter on Roška street in Ljubljana
Abstract:
The shift towards independence in the general population now occurs in the late twenties, driven by limited housing availability for youth. This trend is particularly challenging for young individuals with emotional and behavioral issues, often placed in specialized facilities without functional families. Upon release, they face a choice between independence and returning home, usually out of necessity rather than a personal preference. The gap between institutional living and complete independence vast and underscores the need for transitional options like youth apartments, which institutions struggle to provide due to overcrowding. The loneliness felt by young people leaving institutions can be eased by shelter animals. This thesis explores cohabitation between humans and animals, emphasizing the shortcomings of current animal shelters. It proposes a new program and spatial prototype with more interaction points among residents and the public. Student peers are also involved to facilitate integration, normalization, and prevention of segregation. This design supports smoother transitions to independence, faster animal adoption, and successful social integration. The project in Ljubljana, near the Roška ulica Street, where the construction of a student dorm is planned, focuses on adaptable housing units that enhance privacy and offer shared spaces for humans and animals. The general public also participates through diverse public programs, with sustainability integrated into the project's programming and architectural design.
