Abstract

Title:Erosion hazard analysis of floodplains using a 2D hydraulic sediment transport model : master thesis no.: 116/II. VOI
Abstract:
As part of the preparation of hydrological-hydraulic studies, which are considered as the technical basis for project documentation and spatial planning acts, the Slovenian water legislation, adopted in 2007, also requires an erosion hazard analysis. In contrast to the procedure for the production of flood maps, the procedure and methodology for the production of erosion maps are poorly defined. In practice, the final products are often based more on engineering assumptions and estimated field conditions than on actual soil properties data and hydraulic conditions during high water events. For the purpose of this master thesis, the possibility of upgrading the current erosion hazard mapping approach was examined by introducing a 2D hydraulic sediment transport model. Sediment transport modeling depends on a well-developed and stable hydraulic model which also includes the information about the geological soil composition. The land use has a major influence on the transport process as well. Furthermore, the results depend on the choice of transport equations and other sediment transport parameters. The results gained with the model were used to describe the dynamics of erosion processes on floodplains in more detail and to produce erosion hazard maps.
