Abstract

Title:Tissue flossing effects on post-activation potentiation of thigh muscles
Abstract:
Today, different methods are used to improve acute sports performance. One of the new ones is tissue flossing, which is becoming increasingly popular for both performance enhancement and rehabilitation. The different methodologies used for the application of flossing band may be a reason that its effects on sports performance are not yet clearly proven. Therefore, the aim of our study was to investigate the effects of applying tissue flossing to the thigh on bilateral countermovement jump (CMJ) performance and contractile properties of the vastus lateralis (VL) and vastus medialis (VM) muscles. Nineteen recreational athletes (11 males and 8 females; aged 23.10 ± 2.70 yrs) were included in the study. Subjects were randomly assigned to days of elastic band compression application (3 sets of 2 min compression, 2 min rest between sets) with a predetermined experimental (EXP = 95.00 ± 17.40 mmHg) or control pressure (CON = 18.90 ± 3.50 mmHg). The first part of the measurements was performed before and after the warm-up. The warm-up consisted of 5 min of stationary cycling, dynamic stretching exercises and specific jumping exercises. The second part consisted of six measurements after the application of elastic band compression (0.5, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 min). Tissue flossing showed negative effects on the contraction time (Tc) of the VL (p < 0.01) and VM (p = 0.03) muscles, the maximal radial displacement (Dm) of the VL (p = 0.03) and VM (p < 0.01), CMJ height (p < 0.01) and maximum CMJ take-off power (p < 0.01), whereas no statistically significant changes occurred in CMJ take-off velocity (p = 0.18). These changes were only observed for the interaction with time, i.e. after the intervention ended, but not for the assigned compression method and/or the interaction of group and time measurements. The elastic band compression protocol used in this study was found to induce fatigue rather than potentiation. Therefore, further studies are needed to investigate the dose-response relationship of different configurations of preconditioning activity on neuromuscular function.
