Abstract

Title:
Comparison of LiDAR and photogrammetric data for assessing the potential for exploiting solar energy in the Vipava valley
Abstract:
We are facing increasing environmental threats as a results of exceeding the carrying capacity of the Earth. Sustainable development is a key challenge for our future, where renewable energy sources play an important role such as solar enegry. Utilization of solar cells presents a good way to reduce carbon footprint since the sun is a renewable energy source. It strengthens energy security, and their installation is easy and fast. We compared LiDAR and photogrammetric data to determine the potential for harnessing solar enegry in Vipava valley in three selected areas, as we wanted to determine whether these areas are suitable for the installation of solar power plants and which data is more appropriate for calculating solar irradiance or the potential of rooftop surfaces. We used LiDAR, while photogrammetric data was obtained using a drone. We found out that the ArcGIS Pro software is not suitable for proscessing photogrammetric data, as it is too time consuming. The calculated average annual solar energy received and the annual electric potential on favorable rooftop surfaces [MWh] using LiDAR and photogrammetric data differ minimally (less than 1 %). The fact that LiDAR is publicly accessible and free for users plays an important role. We also found out that the selected areas in Vipava valley have a high potential for exploiting solar energy, which is very positive from a sustainable point of view and energy security.
