Abstract

Title:The use of didactic films in prisoner education
Abstract:
The master's thesis deals with non-formal education of prisoners, who otherwise belong to vulnerable social groups. These individuals often face unemployment, come from socially and economically disadvantaged environments, are poorly educated and have a range of negative educational experiences. The education can be the opportunity for prisoners to resocialise more effectively after serving their sentence in such a way that they are better equipped with the skills they might need to find a new job. Education could be a protective factor that significantly contributes to reducing recidivism. The Slovenian Institute for Adult Education has developed a series of didactic films "Towards success in life", which are specifically intended for vulnerable groups and relate to all eight fundamental competences that are an important part of lifelong learning of adults: communication in the mother language, communication in foreign languages, mathematical competence and basic competences in science and technology, digital literacy, learning to learn, social and civic competences, initiative and entrepreneurship, cultural awareness and expression. Education and learning with the help of information and communication technology is steadily gaining importance in times of rapid change. Therefore, with the master's thesis, we wanted to determine whether these didactic films are an appropriate learning tool for the selected vulnerable social group – prisoners. With the help of in-depth interviews with professionals in the field of education at prison institutions across Slovenia, we came to the conclusion that didactic films could be an appropriate learning tool, but that effective use and acquisition of knowledge would require individual adjustments in use for the selected target group. In individual cases, it would be better to use a group watch of a film, participants should be able to check the understanding of what they have heard and, if there is a drop in concentration, watch the film in parts by part. Care is also needed when forming a group of prisoners, which should be similar to each other in terms of goals and prior knowledge.
