Abstract

Title:
Hagakure and Samurai Ethos: Ideal and Reality
Abstract:
This undergraduate thesis aims to examine the content of Hagakure – an 18th century document attributed to Yamamoto Tsunetomo, a former samurai from Saga Prefecture. In contrast to the peace and stability of the Edo period, Hagakure emphasises radical behaviour and the establishment of samurai values associated with death, which Yamamoto saw as crucial to the samurai ethos. After explaining the origin and history of the samurai, the next chapter explains the concepts of bushidō, honour and loyalty. The latter two are explained in terms of the purpose of death for which the Hagakure is famous. Finally, after a sociological perspective on the book, this thesis concludes with the reason why Hagakure was written.
