Abstract

Title:The human scale as a tool for planning a modern neighbourhood in Jesenice
Abstract:
The thesis deals with a human-scale development strategy on one of the undeveloped sites in Jesenice. Jesenice is generally considered a functionalist city and, as a result, there are many neighbourhoods that need to be transformed from large blocks of flats into attractive neighbourhoods for the general public. Due to its unique structure, the degraded industrial area and the special central location that could serve as a linking area, the site offers great potential for the development of a “human scale” area. The thesis starts with an introduction to the research question “How to develop public life in neighbourhood design in conjunction with a human-scale planning strategy?” In the following, the triangulation method is applied to the literature review and the case study. Therefore, the following section discusses theoretical studies that discuss the human scale from different perspectives. Based on the literature, key principles are derived that can be applied to the case study and design proposal for the site. Typical neighbourhood in Jesenice is then analysed in terms of the “human scale” principles. The next section explores the location of the treatment in detail. This is followed by a design proposal based on the literature and principles presented earlier. Moreover, this research can serve as a practical model for transforming old industrial areas, most of them degraded into “human scale” concepts.
