Abstract

Title:Laser shock peening of AZ80 magnesium alloy
Abstract:
In this thesis, the use of laser shock peening (LSP) to improve the properties of AZ80 magnesium alloy was investigated. As part of the research, two samples of the magnesium alloy were prepared and analyzed using different intensities of laser shock peening without coating (LSPwC). During the analysis we focused on the following properties: surface roughness, residual stresses, microhardness, corrosion resistance and microstructure. The results obtained were compared with those of the base material. We found that LSPwC has a favorable effect on hardness, induces compressive residual stresses and improves corrosion resistance. However, the surface roughness increases significantly, which may have a negative effect especially on the corrosion resistance of the alloy.
