Abstract

Title:
Translation challenges while translating instructions for use of medical devices
Abstract:
Instructions for use (IFU) of medical devices remain a very underresearched text type. This Master’s thesis presents the IFUs of medical devices as a text type and their importance in the translation of similar documents. The focus lies on the following hypotheses: 1) at least 50% of the directives from the source text are translated using a formal equivalent in the target text; 2) there is a change in the strength of the obligation in at least 10% of directives; and 3) different translation approaches in translating directives are used depending on the translation direction. These hypotheses were tested based on a translation analysis of a bidirectional corpus containing IFUs of medical devices originally written in either English or Slovene and their translations into Slovene or English. The analysed texts are parts of instruction manuals that describe procedures where the reader is addressed directly. The results of the first stage of analysis revealed how directives such as modal verbs, imperatives and other verbal expressions that express obligation were used in Slovene and English. The second stage analysis identified the changes in obligation expressed by the directives in translations into English and Slovene. The results also show different translation approaches within both translation directions.
