Abstract

Title:Physical activity in ŠD GIB Šiška during self-isolation
Abstract:
Športno društvo GIB Ljubljana Šiška is one of the oldest and largest associations in Slovenia. Last year it celebrated its 120th anniversary and can pride themselves with top results in women's artistic gymnastics and judo. In its extended offer, the society also offers various types of guided exercises for adults. Not a lot of research has been done in Slovenia examining physical activity during the self-isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our aim was to investigate how self-isolation (restrictions, government measures, lockdown of schools, sport clubs, etc.) affected the physical activity of the members of the GIB Šiška who attended FIT Gib guided exercise classes before the pandemic. In relation to this period, the use of online content has also increased significantly. We were also interested in how the use of online content has contributed to physical activity. All selected data was for the period of the first wave of COVID-19 (March-May 2020) and for the period before the outbreak. Thus, we compared data on physical activity in ŠD GIB Šiška during the self-isolation and in the pre-self-isolation period. We included 76 individuals aged between 30 and 60 years. The survey was conducted via the 1KA online platform, which could be accessed by members of the society who had participated in at least one guided exercise class in 2019 and 2020. The questions were related to their physical activity before and during self-insulation. How many times a week they participated in guided exercise class and which ones were they. If they used any online tools and which to further motivate them to be physically active and if they used any content provided by the society to help them do so. We were also interested in the main reasons why were members physically active. The results showed that the respondents were more active during self-isolation than before it, with a 22% increase. The most common reasons for being physically active were relaxation and fun, as well as well-being and the importance of exercise for health. There were gender differences in the use of online content. Women were more likely to use online content as an aid to physical activity. Women were also more motivated to exercise anywhere and at any time. However, they were more likely to use other sources than the offer of the society. In order to improve the exercise classes, it was also part of my job to find out what the members of the society wished for. The most common answer was that they wanted to see more live training classes online. This thesis is one of the few that looks at the physical activity of the members of the society during the first wave of COVID-19. It shows how the services offered by the GIB Šiška Sports Society adapted to the first wave of the pandemic, and how the members of the association who were attending adult guided exercise classes before the lockdown adapted to this.
