In the present thesis, we explore visual storytelling in the form of a picture book. Through the medium of illustrated narrative, we interpret a short story. We examine the relationship between text and image in the picture book and existing forms of the relationship between text and image in picture books. We define a short story and incorporate it into prose in the format of a picture book. We engage in an examination of illustrators' approaches to the style of illustration, where the final outcomes are photographs depicting three-dimensional spatial compositions of illustrations. We summarize the characteristics of magical realism.
In the practical part, we created a series of illustrations using the researched technique of photographs of three-dimensional spatial compositions. We found an appropriate illustration style that reflects the style of magical realism used in the short story. We described the technical aspect of creating the illustrations and the use of light and shadow in the photographs of spatial compositions. With the created illustrations, we designed a picture book. In the thesis, we the transfer of narrative from literary to a visual medium and the characteristics of three-dimensional illustration.
