The thesis focuses on the experience of pénthos (compunction) and literary devices used to express it in selected passages by authors of the Sinai school. During the study, various
characteristics of pénthos were extracted and combined into six categories (environment, elicited – unelicited, autoteleological – archeteleological, methods, accompanying emotions, and modes of expressing pénthos). Depending on the intensity and expression of these characteristics, pénthos can either serve as a tool on the path of spiritual ascent, in which case it can be described as protreptic, or as an obstacle – apotreptic.
