Abstract

Title:Avalanche-simulation of natural force
Abstract:
Few people experience an avalanche in reality, but thanks to the internet and other media, we can watch it whenever we want. Before the 18th century, few people, residents or visitors to the mountains, saw an avalanche. With the development of technology and science, the understanding and experience of natural forces or their simulations has become widespread. Today, we have reached a point where even a landslide can be created digitally. In this work, I explore the avalanche itself, why it happens and what happens during an avalanche. For the effect it creates I refer to the romantic experience of the sublime. In doing so, I explore representations of avalanches in art, the change in feeling that is manifested in representations of avalanches in art, and the question of the contemporary experience of this natural force. I question the role of simulation in art and the relationship of simulation to photography or video, and how the artistic simulation of an avalanche affects the experience of the viewer.
