The thesis shows the negative side of social networks and raises awareness about the possibilities to improve and use online platforms safely. It starts by presenting the rise of online social networks, which have grown exponentially in recent years. Later, it shows today's society as programmed, manipulated by algorithms that change our way of life. Through the documentary film The Social Dilemma, the thesis shows in a more practical way the problems caused by online platforms such as Google, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. It also focuses on the power of likes, which nowadays determine our reputation and popularity among other people or users. Our self-image depends on the number of likes we receive. He then goes on to give some of the most common negative effects of social networks, such as depression, anxiety, catfishing, criminal activities, etc. Finally, he illustrates the modern search for a potential partner on a dating app called Tinder. In this chapter, he shows an extreme example of Tinder scamming, which raises concerns about fake profiles on the app. The aim of the thesis is to show how social networks actually cause anti-sociality and to raise awareness of how, in addition to the positive effect of connectedness, online networks can bring more negative effects into our lives.
