Telomeres are end sequences in chromosomal DNA that protect it from damage and mutations. In addition, they protect DNA from shortening during the replication process.
Due to this task, their activity is related to aging or senescence. The addition of a telomere is performed by the enzyme telomerase, but it ceases to function in most adult
cells due to an evolutionary mechanism that protects against cancer. Immortal cell lines take advantage of telomerase for their continuous proliferation. Therefore, the study of
the telomere is very important for understanding immortal cell lines. As part of my thesis, I will describe the structure and function of the telomere. I will explore telomere dynamics through a literature review using several examples of immortalized cell lines.
