Grassroots alternative culture in a small spa town: M. A. thesis

The thesis deals with grassroots and alternative culture that developed in the town of Rogaška Slatina from the late 1980s and until the year 2023. The town has a long tradition of spa tourism, which has an impact on its spatial layout and the life of the local community, and consequently on the development of a local grassroots and alternative culture. The thesis is divided into three main parts: 1. space; 2. alternative and grassroots culture; and 3. overview of grassroots alternative culture in Rogaška Slatina. The first part is mainly dedicated to tourist space and includes a historical overview of the development of Rogaška Slatina. The second part offers general views and definitions of grassroots and alternative culture, while the third is focused on grassroots alternative culture in Rogaška Slatina. The latter is further divided into three subchapters, the first dealing with local activists' memories of spaces, the second describing the activists and their activity, and the last one on political organising, more specifically the struggle for a Youth Centre. Tourism certainly has an impact on the lives of local people, some of whom have creative and artistic needs that are not easily met in their environment. The thesis deals with the development of grassroots alternative culture in a small spa town.

• Title: Samonikla alternativna kultura v majhnem zdraviliškem kraju: Magistrsko delo

Abstract

Magistrsko delo obravnava samoniklo in alternativno kulturo, ki se je razvijala v Rogaški Slatini od konca osemdesetih let 20. stoletja do leta 2023. Mesto ima dolgoletno tradicijo zdraviliškega turizma, ki vpliva na njegovo prostorsko ureditev in na življenje lokalne skupnosti, posledično pa tudi na razvoj lokalne samonikle in alternativne kulture. Magistrsko delo je razdeljeno na tri osrednje vsebinske sklope: 1. prostor, 2. alternativna in samonikla kultura ter 3. pregled samonikle alternativne kulture v Rogaški Slatini. Prvi sklop je namenjen predvsem turističnemu prostoru in vključuje zgodovinski pregled razvoja Rogaške Slatine. Drugi del ponuja splošne poglede in opredelitve samonikle in alternativne kulture, tretji pa se osredotoča na samoniklo alternativno kulturo v Rogaški Slatini. Slednji je nadalje razdeljen na tri podpoglavja, pri čemer prvo obravnava spomine lokalnih aktivistov na prostore, drugo opisuje aktiviste in njihovo dejavnost, zadnje pa politično organiziranje, natančneje boj za mladinski center. Turizem vsekakor vpliva na življenje lokalnih prebivalcev, med njimi pa imajo nekateri ustvarjalne in umetniške potrebe, ki jih v svojem okolju ne morejo zlahka zadovoljiti. Magistrsko delo se ukvarja z razvojem lokalne alternativne kulture v majhnem zdraviliškem kraju.
