Abstract

Title:Regulation of alcohol addiction at social work centers
Abstract:
I researched the help and support for people with alcohol addiction at social work centers. I researched how competent social workers, employed at social work centers feel for working with people addicted to alcohol, how the feeling of competence is influenced by years of employment, frequency of working with them and participation in training on the topic of alcohol addiction. I also researched how satisfied social workers are with the content of the training, with cooperation with other associations that work in the field of alcohol addiction, with the level of support and help that people with alcohol addiction receive at the centers and what their suggestions for improvements are. My research is quantitative and descriptive. The population that I included in the research are all social workers employed at social work centers in Slovenia. Results showed that 75% of social workers employed at social work centers work with people with alcohol addiction at least occasionally, that almost half of them feel neither competent nor incompetent to work with them, almost half of them cannot define whether they feel satisfied or dissatisfied with cooperation with associations that work in the field of regulating alcohol addiction, with the level of support and help that users with alcohol addiction receive at social work centers and with the number of trainings on the topic of addiction. More than a half of social workers did not attend a single training on the topic of alcohol addiction during their employment at the social work center. The majority (81%) of them partially or fully agree that it would be necessary to establish a new area of work with people with alcohol addiction issues and their families, mandatory training of professionals and thereby improve the implementation of social welfare services at social work centers. Just under a quarter of social workers feel incompetent or very incompetent to work with people with alcohol addiction, those with a longer working experience and those who work with people with alcohol addiction more often and who have attended training on the topic of alcohol addiction, feel a bit more competent. 44% of social workers who attended training on the topic of alcohol addiction were satisfied or very satisfied with the content of the training, 45% of them were satisfied or very satisfied with cooperation with associations working in the field of alcohol addiction management. Social workers employed in the regions of social work centers in Ljubljana, Maribor and Celje are more satisfied with cooperation with other associations working in the field of alcohol addiction management than social workers from other regions of social work centers. 21% are dissatisfied or very dissatisfied with the level of help and support that people with alcohol addiction receive at social work centers. Those who feel incompetent or very incompetent to work with people with alcohol addiction are more dissatisfied or very dissatisfied with the level of help and support that people with alcohol addiction receive at social work centers.
