Abstract

Title:Snowfall interception based on the development phase of spruce stands in Pokljuka
Abstract:
The influence of development stage and canopy cover on snow interception was studied in spruce stands in Pokljuka. Snow cover height, stand development stage, and canopy cover were determined by laser scanning before and after snowfall for all 225 30 × 30 m plots. Undamaged trees were also measured in the field to determine threshold heights for each developmental stage (n = 113). For snow cover height in open areas, measurements from the nearest meteorological station - Rudno polje - were selected (3 km). The study shows that the stage of forest development has a statistically significant effect on snowfall interception, which is lower in younger and older stages of development. The results also show that canopy closure has a statistically significant effect on snowfall interception, which increases with increasing canopy closure.
