Three copper(II) compounds with 5-sulfosalicylic acid (C7H6O6S = H3L) were synthesized. The syntheses took place in water in the presence of three hydroxypyridines (2-, 3- or 4OHpy). Besides these initial starting compounds, guanidinium carbonate (CH6N3)2CO3 was also used for the syntheses. These isolated compounds are formulated as: {(CH6N3)[Cu(L)(H2O)](2OHpy)2}n 1, Cu(HL)(3OHpy)2(H2O) 2, (CH6N3)Cu(L)(H2O) 3. The structure of the compound 1 is known, showing a presence of L3- ligand, while 2OHpy and guanidinium cation CH6N3+ being noncoordinated. Identity with the known structure was checked with the XRD analysis. On the other hand, the compounds 2 and 3 reveal no report of their structure, though based on the IR and CHN analysis, HL2- and 3OHpy are present in 2 but without CH6N33+. Differently, L3- and CH6N3+, but not 4OHpy are found in 3. Using UV-Vis spectroscopy for the compounds 1 and 2, different coordination spheres are suggested for them. This is seen by their different green coloration, as well as by a different position of their d-d band.
