Introduction: More and more women in labor around the world give birth by caesarean section. This can save the life of the mother and child, but it can leave a severe mark on the mother, as it can be a very traumatic experience for her. It has been known for a long time that it leaves severe physical consequences on the mother, and more and more medical professionals are wondering how a caesarean section, especially an emergency caesarean section, affects her psychological well-being. The incidence of postpartum depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder is noticeably higher. These diseases have a negative impact on the mother's entire life, partner relationships, connection with the child, daily chores and work. Purpose: The purpose of the thesis is to investigate the impact of a caesarean delivery on the mother's psychological well-being and the role played by health professionals in the prevention and treatment of postpartum psychiatric illnesses. Methods: Review of domestic and foreign literature on the topic of caesarean section and its connection with psychological well-being. Literature was obtained with the help of PubMed and Cohrane Library of the online portal DiKul, in the Medline, COBIB.si, CINAHL and Sci-Hub databases. Results: The results showed that caesarean section can have a big impact on the mother's well-being. Especially when it comes to emergency caesarean section, there is a significantly higher incidence of postpartum depression and anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder, as the mother cannot adequately prepare herself mentally for this type of delivery. Discussion and conclusion: We found out how important it is to properly prepare pregnant women for the course of childbirth before giving birth and to explain to her what the different types of childbirth are so that she can prepare more appropriately. Already during pregnancy, we need to find out which pregnant women are more prone to mental illnesses or which already have depression or anxiety, as they have a greater chance that the condition will worsen after childbirth. An important role is also played by nurses and midwives in the maternity ward, as well as by the visiting nurse, who must actively detect signs of postpartum depression in mothers, as this is the only way we can offer mothers the help they need more quickly.
