The current analysis focuses on the development of Slovene as presented in Toporišič's works, especially in the Slovene grammar (1984, 2000), in which Toporišič divides the development of the Slovene literary language into seven periods, from the ReformationCounter Reformation (1550-1615) to the so-called Modern period (1900-). The paper examines the criteria for defining each of the periods, an evaluation of preceding research into the subject, the author's innovative approach to this issue and the academic acceptance of Toporišič's division over time. Toporišič's division is also evaluated in terms of new research and denominations, as well as other time divisions.
