The publication of an article with a phraseological theme in Jezik in slovstvo 1973/1974 was quite an unexpected excursion by Jože Toporišič into phraseology, partly because, at first sight, the text seems like a summary of Shansky's book on Russian phraseology from 1963. In this contribution, it is shown that this unexpectedness is only apparent, since Toporišič had already encountered phraseological material in two ways: as a teacher of Slovene as a foreign language (1954-1965) and in preparing his doctoral thesis on the prose of F. S. Finžgar. Close reading of his article shows that in many regards Toporišič did not follow Shansky.
