Abstract

Title:Physical activity of physical therapists at Slovenian health resorts : diploma work
Abstract:
Introduction: In addition to the many positive effects of physical activity in maintaining physical health and preventing chronic diseases, physical activity boosts self-esteem and thus reduces the risk of stress and depression. According to the World Health Organisation guidelines, many studies have shown that health professionals are not physically active enough. However, researchers have found that physiotherapists are more physically active than other health professionals. Purpose: To find out how physically active physiotherapists working in spas across Slovenia are and whether they are aware of the guidelines recommended by the World Health Organisation for adults to do the right amount of physical activity. Methods: Data on physical activity of physiotherapists and other health professionals were collected using a questionnaire published on the 1KA online platform. Results: The questionnaire was completed in full by 93 health professionals, of whom 81 were women and 12 were men. Our sample showed that physical activity was very important to almost half (49 %) of physiotherapists. Most physiotherapists (36 %) were moderately physically active 3 times a week, which is higher than the percentage of other health professionals (19 %). The most important reason for physiotherapists and health professionals to engage in physical activity is to maintain health and well-being. The latest WHO recommendations for physical activity for adults were known by 23 % of physiotherapists and 7 % of other health professionals surveyed. A high proportion of physiotherapists surveyed expressed a desire to participate in organised exercise at work. Discussion and conclusion: Based on the answers given by the respondents, we found that physiotherapists were more physically active than other health professionals. Given the expressed willingness to participate in organised exercise at the workplace, it would make sense to introduce organised exercise for employees.
