Abstract

Title:Expressing likeness and personality of the subject in illustration
Abstract:
The subject of this BA thesis is portrait in illustration. We take a closer look at both the expression of likeness as well as personality of the subject and aim to discover how both can be achieved in a stylized depiction. The thesis concerns itself with fiction illustration and its main purpose is the exploration of portrait through the process of illustration. The goal of the thesis is to produce a series of illustrations depicting nine notable individuals, with the final product being an introductory booklet. In the theoretical part we intend to examine the available literature on the subject of portrait, its development throughout history and its use in expressing the story and meaningfulness of the individual portrayed. We wonder about the relationship between the subject, the portrait and the artist, as well as about ways this can be reflected in illustration. In the practical part of the thesis, we create a series of nine illustrations, depicting recipients of the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, with emphasis on expressing their likeness and personality through illustration. Finally, these images are reproduced in a booklet, presenting the chosen individuals.
