Everyone who works has a career, and everyone's life outside work is linked to their career. Careers mean different things to different people, different places, different activities. In the first part of my thesis, I briefly introduce the basic concepts of career planning, development and change. In the second part, I focus on the careers of opera singers. It is an example of modern careers that are uncertain, flexible and boundaryless, or parallel careers. Based on a survey of 43 opera singers working in Slovenia, a life course analysis and an interview with three of the singers, I examined how different factors and institutions influence the development of opera singers according to their gender and age. I was interested in what they do professionally besides opera singing, what is their education and employment status. Most of the opera singers sing other musical genres, teach, and some have other (non-musical) professions. Singers themselves see the parallelism of their careers as an opportunity to gain new skills and experience. It is difficult to summarise the careers of artists, in my case singers, in a clear framework. Each of these careers is different, with a different course, interesting and unique.
