Introduction: unplanned out-of-hospital births are in most cases uncomplicated and often occur in the home environment. Since planned hospital birth can be difficult, the role of nurses in emergency home births is very important. Because of that the education of emergency medical teams in paediatrics and unplanned out-of-hospital birth is of paramount importance. Purpose: In this thesis we will present and review relevant guidelines and interventions in emergency home birth. We wanted to focus on the meaning and tasks of emergency medical care in emergency home birth, and to define the importance of the care of the newborn and the mother after delivery. Methods: descriptive method will be used with a review of domestic and foreign professional and scientific literature, most of it published since 2013. The literature was searched in Slovene and English with the following keywords: emergency medical services AND birth before arrival; medical care AND mother/child AND newborn; unplanned home birth; delivery AND outside hospital; paramedics; experiences. Results: The incidence of unplanned/urgent births is slightly increasing year after year worldwide, in many cases resulting in higher mortality rates for both newborns and mothers. Education is crucial, in order to reduce the fear and anxiety of rescuers about how the birth itself will go. Discussion and conclusion: in emergency home birth, immediate action by the emergency medical team is important, as every minute counts. Complications that may arise during or after delivery can be life-threatening for the mother and the newborn.
