The manuscript tradition of the literary genre planctus Mariae is based in the Gospel story of Jesus' suffering (Mt 26-28; Mr 14-16; Lk 22-24; Jn 18-20). Extant manuscripts and prints show that from the eleventh century onwards the literary genres vita Christi and planctus Mariae developed in parallel as integral parts of the Passion with some homiletic extensions. The aim of the contribution is to show, on the basis of the extant manuscript tradition of the literary genre planctus Mariae (or compassio Mariae), how and in what circumstances the descriptive Gospel variant about the role of Mary in the Passion intensified in lyric emotional stories about the Passion with a special emphasis on expressions of Mary's compassion, as manifested by numerous other stories about Jesus' life in manuscript form in Slovene from the 18th century.
