Abstract

Title:
Conceptual design of a natural bathing area with thermal complex at lake Bled
Abstract:
The role of tourism and its influence on Bled has changed throughout its history. Its current tourist situation is predominately seasonally-oriented as Bled welcomes the majority of its guests in the summer, while winter and transitional periods fall behind. Guests generally spend less than three days in Bled which results in a high fluctuation. A large number of visitors with a high turnover frequency negatively affects the tourist destination quality in view of its visitors and living comfort of the local population. The reason for the situation partially lies in an unsuitable offer which lacks year-round activities which would make its visitors stay longer. An expansion of a high-quality program to mitigate the curve extremes during the winter and summer season due to its multi-layered use is crucial to achieve and maintain balance between sustainable tourism and the Bled locals. The thesis answers the issue by considering a natural bathing area with thermal complex at a well-frequented location under the Bled castle which has an existing bathing area. The program was based on the tradition and origins of tourism in Bled as a spa destination which was headed by Arnold Rikli. At the same time, the thesis and its new architectural design solves the issue of the existing aged bathing area which does not conform to the development guidelines of Bled tourism.
