Abstract

Title:Mindfulness and midwifery students : diploma work
Abstract:
Introduction: Being mindful means being aware of your experience, both internal and external. You are aware of your thoughts, emotions, bodily sensations and actions. Being mindful is a mental capacity of each of us. Mindfulness is also a set of techniques and methods with which we can strengthen our awareness and attention. It is a skill that can be strengthened by regularly performing certain exercises. Being mindful while doing your job is very important. The fact that you are aware of exactly what you are doing at a certain moment can reduce the number of possible errors while improving the quality of work. Purpose: The purpose of the diploma work is to investigate mindfulness and determine whether midwifery students of the Ljubljana Faculty of Medicine know what mindfulness is and whether they use it. Methods: In the first part of the diploma work, we used a descriptive method of review of professional and scientific literature, and in the following, we used a causal non-experimental method of empirical research, where we collected data with the help of an online questionnaire created with the 1Ka program. We also used a validated questionnaire for the assessment of mindfulness (Mindful Attention Awareness Scale - MAAS). Results: 58 out of 67 midwifery students attending the Faculty of Health in Ljubljana participated in the research (86,6 % response). 12 % of the respondents indicated that they do not know the term mindfulness, 79 % indicated that they have heard of the term mindfulness but are not sure that they understand it, and 9 % of midwifery students indicated that they know and understand the term mindfulness. Based on the definition of mindfulness, we estimate that 20 midwifery students (34 %) interpreted the term mindfulness correctly. The average MAAS score of all midwifery students combined that we obtained is 3,2, which indicates that mindfulness among midwifery students could be further improved. Most of the respondents believe that the knowledge of mindfulness would help them and could be included in the study program. Discussion and conclusion: Mindfulness is extremely important for working in healthcare. Future research should focus on the short- and long-term effectiveness of implementing mindfulness techniques and assess their impact on midwifery students' performance in college and clinical practice.
