Abstract

Title:Plant selection for rain gardens in Slovenia
Abstract:
This thesis talks about the human relation with water and the interference with the natural water cycle. In urban areas, which are characterised by a high level of impervious surfaces and the absence of vegetation, the natural water cycle is replaced by urban water cycle. This negatively affects the quality of the environment and life. Nature-based solutions for stormwater management in the cities attempt to approach the natural water cycle to solve the issues of urban water cycle. This thesis focuses on the rain garden, which is a nature-based solution with the greatest variety of functions. The goal is to present a suitable type of rain garden for Slovenian cities and create a list of vegetation for its planting. After a literature review, a field examination of Dutch rain gardens and their vegetation was made. The result is the classification of rain gardens into types and a detailed list of suitable plants. It can be concluded that all types of rain gardens and a varied range of vegetation are suitable for Slovenian conditions. It is important to note that the list of plants is theoretical and pilot projects in our conditions would be recomended.
