Abstract
Background. Research findings demonstrated that sense of coherence (SOC) is a protective factor against stressors in the work environment. SOC could be seen as a resource that can help nurses preserve and maintain workability (WA). Aim. Aiming at preparing the basis for planning the evidence-based public health measures for the preservation/improvement of nurses' WA, the objectives of research were to assess the strength of SOC among nurses and the relationship between WA and SOC. Methods. The data were collected from December 2017 to June 2018 at the University Hospital Center Sisters of Mercy (UHCSM) in Zagreb, Croatia. The overall research design was cross-sectional. A total of 713 nurses participated in the study. The data were collected using Sense of Coherence – Orientation to Life Questionnaire – 29 items (SOC-29), Work Ability Index Questionnaire (WAIQ), and a Sociodemographic, health-related, and work-related questionnaire. Linear regression was used to assess the strength of association between SOC score (SOCS), and sociodemographic and work-related factors, and binary logistic regression to assess association between poor WA index (PWAI) and SOCS, adjusted for possible confounders. Results. The SOC-29-CRO and WAIQ-CRO instruments successfully fulfilled the necessary psychometric criteria. The results of the multivariate linear regression revealed statistically significant positive associations between SOCS, and age (>40 years) (b=9.219, 95% CI 2.028–16.410, p=0.012); level of education (master of nursing (b=10.515, 95% CI 1.917–19.114, p=0.017); bachelor of nursing (b=4.393, 95% CI 0.889–7.898, p=0.014)); transportation mode by car (b=5.941, 95% CI 2.466–9.417, p<0.001).The results of multivariate logistic analysis showed a strong statistically significant negative association between SOCS and PWAI (OR=0.966, 95% CI 0.954 – 0.977, p<0.001) when adjusted for confounders. Conclusions. This was the first study to examine the relationship between WA and SOC in the population of nurses. Our research suggested that SOC is an important health promoting personal resource of nurses which might offer protection regarding work-related stress. Weak SOC could be an important explanatory factor for poor WA.

Title:Sense of Coherence and Work Ability Among Nurses
Abstract:
Workability – WA). Namen in cilji. Za zbiranje podatkov smo uporabili naslednje vprašalnike: Občutek koherence – usmerjenost k življenju – 29 elementov; vprašalnik Indeks delazmožnosti; Sociodemografski, z zdravjem in delom povezan vprašalnik. Rezultati. Vprašalnika SOC-29-CRO in WAIQ-CRO vključujeta zadovoljive psihometrične značilnosti. Rezultati multivariatne linearne regresije so pokazali statistično pomembno pozitivno povezavo med SOCS in starostjo (>40let) (b=9,219, 95% CI 2,028–16,410, p=0,012); stopnjo izobrazbe (magistrica zdravstvene nege (b=10,515, 95% CI 1,917–19,114, p=0,017); diplomirana medicinska sestra (b=4,393, 95% CI 0,889–7,898, p=0,014)); prevozom na delo z avtomobilom (b=5,941, 95% CI 2,466–9,417, p<0,001). Rezultati multivariatne logistične analize so pokazali negativno statistično pomembno povezavo med SOCS in PWAI (OR=0,966, 95% CI 0,954–0,977, p<0,001).
