The thesis is concerned with the terminology of church art and architecture in English translations of Slovene texts on the topic of monument conservation, published since 1997 in the Slovene journal for monument conservation, Varstvo spomenikov. The aim of the thesis was to analyse all terminological correspondences in the target texts for a selection of roughly 100 source text terms and identify as well as classify the terminological errors that occur among them. The analysis was based on the hypothesis that due to a lack of expert knowledge, inadequate resources and historical circumstances, English terminology of church art and architecture causes problems for Slovene specialised translators, resulting in terminological errors or inconsistencies in the target texts. It was carried out by processing a custom-made bilingual parallel corpus of selected source and target texts using Sketch Engine. The results of the analysis reveal that a significant number of terminological errors can be found in the selected texts and that the errors can be divided into six different categories or types. The results also shine light on some specific problems of Slovene-English terminological equivalence in the field of church art and architecture, including differences in conceptualisation and terminological gaps. Finally, the results serve as a basis for a discussion on terminological (in)competence in specialised translation, which explores the possible underlying issues that may account for the various types of terminological errors identified in the target texts.
